SITUATION

On April 15, 2019, Notre Dame Cathedral burned in Paris.

COMPLICATION

Initially, few people realized the seriousness of the fire. It was burning quickly, but the firemen, police, and media had not arrived to manage the scene or alert the local and global audiences to the catastrophe.

ACTION

Took photos from three locations to document the fire: the Marais when the first wisps of smoke appeared; the garden behind the church, its spire surrounded by smoke; and the left bank with a view of the Rose Window threatened by the raging fire in the small window above it.

RESULTS

Applied journalistic and photography skills to capture images of Notre Dame burning, tell this tragic story visually and, as a result, touch people’s hearts.
